Escape from New York...
<This is a reposting of an original entry from another blog now defunct>
12th September, 2001 ,Wednesday 11a.m. Malaysian time
Back home..at last..the past few hours have been
traumatic for me ,to say the least..I found out about
the WTC,Twin Towers tragedy while waiting for my
flight back to KL at Gate F52 , Changi
airport(7.35a.m. Malaysian time) .I could not believe
my eyes when I watched the footage on CNN. I just
dropped my bags and sat transfixed to the TV ignoring
the announcement to board flight SQ104 to KL. All I
could utter were the words "Oh My god..Ya Allah!!"
repetitively much to the amazement of the other
passengers. I was the only transfer passenger from
Amsterdam to KL via Singapore while the rest were
domestic travellers. My 'original' connecting flight
SQ102 (Singapore -->KL) left without me as my SQ 23
flight from Amsterdam got in late into Singapore
(could be due to the tragedy in New York).
What hit me the most was the fact that I narrowly
escaped the mayhem in Lower Manhattan. My original
plan to extend my New York stay for another week
meant leaving New York on Tuesday nite and visiting
the World Trade Centre on Tuesday morning, the day of
the tragedy. I even wrote the day's planned itenary in
my notebook. But I changed my mind and decided to
fly out Sunday nite instead and stay overnite in
Amsterdam. Alhamdullilah, for once my crazy sense of
adventure/impulsiveness saved my life . The worst
that could happen to me had I not changed my plans was
being trapped underneath the rubble or dead in Tower
1. At the very least,I could be stranded in New York
with only USD50,1 CITIBANK BLUE credit card (3 of my
other credit cards cannot be used much to my dismay!) and
targetted by Anti-Islam Americans.
This just goes to show how fragile life is. I am ever
so grateful to Allah for saving me indirectly . I
cannot begin to describe how good it feels to be back
home in Malaysia....
(on Sept 12, 2001 the Petronas Twin Towers tenants were also evacuated due to "false alarm")

Day 15: my 24 hours in Amsterdam...
Day 15: 10 September ,2001 (Monday)
When I was walking around Amsterdam this afternoon,I spotted the same Egyptian cafe where I frequented way back in 1993 during backpacking days! It's still at the same spot after all these years. The only significant change is that now there's a McDonalds beside it. The Egyptian owners are as cheeky as ever..some things never change..*sigh*
Nothing much to do dusk, as its the autumn/fall season.Shops close as early as 7 or 8p.m.!!I decided not to go to any museums, as I did that the last time I was here. Plus funds are running low!!
I am back at the hostel. Luckily the owners of the hostel takes care of the security of the place.Hostellers are given a key-card to enter the hostel and the room. Not bad for a youth hostel.
(Recommendation: check out FLYING PIG HOSTEL!!)
Tonite at the hostel, there's a live DJ playing RAVE/HOUSE/TECHNO music at the foyer..cannot stand it ..too loud..very hypnotic
though...
okay..Gotta go!Internet access is free but limited to 20 minutes only!Plus this trance/techno music is getting to me..also sick of seeing so much sleaze in Amsterdam.
(Note to self:Have to purify self upon return home!Hahhaha)

Day 11: I saw Puff Daddy, not J.Lo!
Day 11: 6th September (Thursday)
Tonite is the MTV Video Awards, 2001.I was at the
venue (the Lincoln Centre) at 4.30p.m.(after doing some sight-seeing)..was a bit too late..those who came in at 1p.m. was actually let into the stage area outside as long as they are over 18 and got an ID..but I still got to see some actin from across the
street..best thing was that people were giving out freebies all the time.I got 2 cool t-shirts and 4 CDs just by being there. All those promotional stuff but there was this t-shirt which I wanted but I could not get it cos was only for teens..told them I was 18
but they would NOT buy it! Hmm..reality bites..I can
NO LONGER pass as a teenager! ;(
So Puff daddy (now known as P.Diddy) made a surprise entrance and performed on top of a big truck along the street. The crowd went crazy...and some people were giving out P.DIDDY posters for the crowd to hold up for P.DIDDY to see...there was also Missy Elliot,N'SYNC , Britney Spears,Christina Aguilera, etc..
I won't spoil the fun for you guys cos the MTV video
awards will be on cable t.v soon..but Britney Spears performed an erotic number..she came out of a cage with a white tiger in it , dressed (half dressed ) in bikini..then she danced while holding
an ALBINO PYTHON on her bare shoulders.Supposed to be erotic?!!
The host was Jamie Foxx..(by the way ,I saw Jamie Foxx when he was on Conan O'Brien show last Tuesday..managed to get into the show, after queuing for tickets at 9a.m., taping at 4.30p.m..1st show with the new 01/02 season set!!Pretty cool!!)
Note:
Left for Amsterdam on Day 14 :9th Sept 2001(Sunday).

Day 7: Bumped into Agassi's bodyguard on the train!AMAZING!!
Day 7: 2 September,2001 (Sunday)
Can't believe it's a week already..and the men that I have "slept with"..hahah..1st day Puerto Rican(ALONIS), then French(ROMAINE), then Japanese(did not get his name), and now Argentinian (GASTON)...you can label me promiscious now..;o)
9a.m.:Anyway,I was on the no.7 train to get to Grand
Central station as I had to change there to get on
line 4 or 5 or 6 to get to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
No.7 also happened to be the only train that goes to
Flushing Meadows (US Open tennis venue). So as I was
casually sitting , I heard a familiar voice.I looked
around and on the other side was HUBERT (Andre Agassi's
bodyguard).I cannot believe my luck!! I went over to
him and said "What happened the other day, Man!!?". He recognized me ofcourse..and replied "What happened to you girrrllll??"
So I told him I waited for almost 2 hours for Agassi and made the BIG SIGNBOARD..but he was mobbed with kids..and I told him how sad I was.He said , I'll get you Andre's signature and mail
it to you.So I found my one & only business card in my pocket and gave it to Hubert..also took photos with him. He was friendly but then again, I cannot expect him to entertain me cos he has a JOB to do..eScurity is paramount in sporting events esp.
with someone who's a crowd favorite like Agassi but I can only pray that he relays my message to Agassi and get me Agassi's signature..but the amazing thing is bumping into Hubert again..what chance in a million can that happen?!!;o)
So after the museum, I went back to Times Square.I
thought there was this Broadway festival but my mistake. It's on 9th september not 2nd.Anyway,I found myself thick in the throng of Brazilians. Sept 2 apparently is Brazil's National Day and
there was a Brazilian carnival along the streets from Times Square to 5th Avenue (famous for shopping),with all sorts of stalls set up.I checked out the Brazilian food..looks a bit like Malay food (i.e Gulai masak lemak, bubur pulut hitam) but I didn't sample anything. What caught my eye were the Brazilian hunks..some topless
(cos it is hot here in New York!!).They gathered to take part in the CAPIOERA (a combination of Brazilian martial arts and graceful dance moves,to the beat of drums!).Fantastic visual feast!I took pictures ofcourse..and the women were gorgeous too! They were dancing away to the samba beat..for a minute there I thought, I was in Brazil!! a Mardi Gras right in the heart of New York City!
Upon reaching,5th avenue (walked through the carnival), what else was there to do but go window shopping!!Things are VERY, VERY expensive in NYC!Visited Bloomingdales, Tiffany's(the famous site where "Breakfast at Tiffany's" was filmed,Audrey Hepburn).Acted like a kid at FAO Schwarczh(the biggest toy store in the world??).The soft toys there are soooo cute..but soo damn
expensive..I don't think i'm gonna shop much in New York ..aside from Victoria Secrets lingerie..hahhah...
7p.m.:Went back to hotel..was so tired that I just slept and scrapped plans to go out again..
10p.m.:something scary happened..some crazy guy had a
fight with someone outside my room and he started
banging on my room door. Romaine went to open the door
although I told him NOT TO..but nothing happened to
him..just the hotel security checking on something.Phew!!
12p.m.: the Argentinian guy (GASTON) came in..me and
Romaine chatted with him for a short while..he does
not know much english..
Note:
Plan for Day 8,Monday,LABOUR DAY HOLIDAY:maybe go up the Empire State Building & visit the Lincoln Arts Centre(the famous Julliard School of Dance is located there!)and jog around Central Park.
HUNK-WATCHING! ;o)

Day 6 : Les Miserables..
Day 6:1st September,2001 (Saturday)
9a.m.:Queued for an hour at the TKTS ticket booth for discounted tickets for Les Miserables.I wanted to complete my THEATRE CLASSICS GRAND SLAM.Saw Miss Saigon in London, Phantom of the Opera in Singapore and now Les Miserables in New York(discounted ticket cost USD 45).
Then off to NBC to catch the studio tours which lasted for 1 hour 15 minutes. The tickets were expensive USD15(discounted!).
Everything costs an arm & a leg here in New York and I was running out of cash fast.I should not have paid for those Victoria
Secrets stuff with my traveller's cheques..too late now. Will have to resort to swiping my credit cards after this. The NBC Tour ended at 1p.m. I was walking like a mad-man cos Les Miserables was supposed to start at 2p.m. and I had already left a message for friend to wait for me at my hotel at 1p.m...and I hate NOT being punctual for appointments.Damn! I managed to get lost en route to the hotel!!Reached the hotel at 1.30p.m. No sight of friend.Good thing, the theatre was just 2 minutes down the road from my
hotel..so went straight there and friend was already at the
theatre..the show was superb..worth the USD 45 I paid!!
Which brings me to the topic of this "friend".He's nice and most
accomodating but I was getting irritated by him.For
someone who studied at Columbia University (20 minutes from Downtown) for his undergraduate degree (4 years)and now working there for another 3 years,he SURE DOES NOT know much about Manhattan .He was not sure of how to get to certain places and
we ended up wasting time walking few blocks just to get to a certain place..and he keeps asking me on Manhattan..it's like i'm the New Yorker and him the tourist.I think I could do better on my own.Honestly!!So I was trying hard to come up with excuses
so that I can go off on my own for the rest of my stay in NYC.
I told "friend" that I was supposed to meet my other "New York Connection" but he did not get the hint.Again we went around in
circles looking for Bloomingdales (after Les Miserables ended at 5p.m.).Finally, I told him repetitively that I need to go back to my hotel as I wanted to do my laundry and I was tired. Now that
worked.Phew!!Peace at last..
Reached the room, and discovered,a new guy..Japanese this time.
Gosh !!In 6 days, I have shared a room with men from many nationalities..hahaha!!(puerto rican, french, japanese..)..not forgetting a stranger who came in and slept on the floor one
nite. Then the french guy came in with his friend. They said
they wanted to change(to go clubbing in Greenwich village).I said, go ahead..who am I to stop them!Haha!
I was planning to go out again to Times Square but ended up sleeping till morning.Hmm..so much for a saturday nite out..
Note:
Day 7, Sunday plan: to do Museum tour plus check out free concert (the launching of new broadway season) at Times square at noon..

DAY 5: Independence Day, Lady Liberty , Underwear & Art..
DAY 5 : 31st August, 2001(Friday)
Happy Independence day , MALAYSIA!! It's so strange
that on MERDEKA day I am standing beneath Lady
Liberty,America's symbol of Hope & Liberty(obviously!)
Endured a queue of 1 hour plus to get up
there..they would not allow any visitors to the crown
during summer..too many cases of heat exhaustion.I
personally am glad cos I do not have the energy to
climb 1000's of step to get up there.Had it been open to public, I know that somehow I will push myself to climb up...after the Lady, went to Ellis Island..the site where many immigrants arrived to the AMERICA the land of hope..read some fascinating
facts.
1860-1885: China migration to Malaysia--> 0.5 million
1890-1915: China migration to Malaysia--> 0.5 million
1930-1955: China migration to Malaysia--> 1.0 million
That's a whole load of Chinese migrating to
Malaysia. Then I checked at one of the interactive
terminal how many people of Malay descendant is in
America to date. The highest concentration is in
California!! Then tried to trace my ancestors whether
they were on the boat to America..came up with Abdul
Samad from Turky...hahah..I don't think so..my
ancestors were Pirates not Turkish! i think??!
2p.m.: Back to manhattan.Decided to go to to NY Stock Exchange.
But they stopped giving tickets and I've got to come back next Tuesday 8a.m.but they were so many good looking traders..one in particular caught my eye..so took a breather and hung out with all the traders who were taking a break from their stressful work, sitting on the steps of some old buildings..bought some artwork on manhattan..pretty neat watercolours..some Black & White
photography..I go crazy over art..gonna cost me a bomb to get all of the framed for my new house. Then while walking to World Trade Centre Observatory (the tallest twin tower building in New York!),I chanced upon HALAL food stalls..heaven..atlast, I get to eat HALAL food.I was on a diet of bread, bananas & Evian for 4 days.
4p.m.: arrived at the World Trade..saw VICTORIA SECRETS
shop..spent a fortune on satin underwear (there was a
buy 2 get 2 free deal but still pricey!).I just go
crazy over VS stuff cos you cannot get them where I come from! That's the whole point of shopping in the U.S.A, isn't it? ;o)
5p.m.decided not to go up World Trade just yet(cost
USD13.50)..and anyway already promised to meet friend at MOMA (Museum of Modern Art) at 7.30p.m...to make a long story short, I was daydreaming on the train and missed a stop AND took the wrong train . Finally, reached MOMA at 7p.m. MOMA was a dissapointment as it was undergoing major renovations.I purposely went on a Friday cos it was "PAY-WHAT-YOU-LIKE" day.I paid 25cents only..hahha!Cheap skate!I believe you should not charge for
ART..ART is for everyone! ;o)
My friend/NYC guide was held up at work. I left a message on
his pager for him to come meet me at my hotel but as usual I got sidetracked and stopped at various shops along the way to my hotel.Apparently, my friend had waited at the hotel for the past half hour.Pity the poor guy!!He has so much patience.I made him wait another 10 minutes (the fastest time ever for me to take shower and change!!).
We walked right up to Central Park West..stopped by Hard Rock Cafe to buy myself a 30 year anniversary T-shirt.My feet were killing me but can't tell my friend that.We stopped for dinner nearby HILTON where there was this HALAL food stall. Had chicken & rice (yes rice again!).We stayed on to chat by the pavement near the stall till 1a.m.! Didn't realise how fast time flies.Friend walked me back to my hotel, then chatted some more at the hotel steps. He must be starved for company!!
Note:
Plan for Day 6,Saturday is to catch "LES MISERABLES" if i can get matinee tickets(discounted!). Depending on my budget, may catch another play,CABARET starring Brook Shields. But my ultimate aim is to get into MTV VIDEO AWARDS this 6th sept(thursday)!
